SYLVIA HILL VISUAL ARTIST

TEXTILE  WORK

This textile piece - "As the crow flies" relates to work I created on childhood.  I grew up in a small village - Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow.
This map is machine stitched with free embroidery on a polyester background.

The other piece "They don't understand" is about growing up, family and identity. This piece featured recently in a publication by Bloomers art on the subject of the Irish diaspora and identity.

The crone collects a brasna.  A brasna- (Gaeilge) is a collection of sticks for the fire which traditionally would have been tied up with a rope and carried on your back.  In my village there was an old woman who used to collect sticks everyday. She used an old pram to carry the sticks home for the fire.
